·         Be prepared to write on the novels in the last half of the course.
·         You may bring in three 3x5 index cards as notes.
·         No books or other notes may be used for the final exam.

Questions to consider in preparation for the final exam:
The Stranger
Do you think justice is served by the verdict? Can a man like Meursault, who is so at odd with society’s conventions and morals, be given a fair trial?  Is Meursault truly judged by a jury of his peers?

The Death of Ivan Ilyich
In the 1800's when this novel was written social conventions discouraged unhappy couples from divorcing. Divorce was frowned upon and even illegal in some nations like Ireland.  In contrast in 2010 statistics show that more than half of all marriages end in divorce.  Using details and examples from the novella support and develop an analytical argument that Ivan and his wife should or should not have sought a divorce for their own happiness.
 The Things They Carried

In many ways, this book is as much about stories, or the necessity of stories, as it is about the Vietnam War.  O’Brien says his novel is a “love story.”  Discuss why this is true using characters and events from the book to prove your thesis.  According to O'Brien, what do stories accomplish?
